Main Street Community Services believes that to achieve educational growth and success one must make the students an active part of the learning process, discovering knowledge rather than simply absorbing its results. Effective teaching requires the instructor to create conditions that enable students to learn as much as they can through active pursuit. We offer a program in which the curriculum and expectations are tailored to what a student needs according to their current level of ability. Lessons and subjects are modified to meet both the needs and levels of the student as well as meeting the essential expectations put forth in the Ontario Curriculum documents.
A typical day for a student in this program would consist of lessons based around core curriculum subjects such as Mathematics, English, and Social Sciences. Another facet of the program is the development of essential life-skills. Being able to relate the subject matter to everyday life situations helps to give students a sense of understanding and accomplishment.
The focus of this program is not on the pursuit of the highest grade or the highest average. The focus is to help students actively engage in the educational process, as well as helping students capitalize on their increased learning capacities and eventually reintegrate them into a full academic program at a public or private school at their appropriate grade level.
